My works intend to explore the theme of ‘The Past meeting the Present’.
I look for archetypal images and try to establish a certain kind of tension between figurative and semi-abstract elements. I use symbols and patterns typical to the environment of my ‘past’ together with materials and themes from my 'present', trying to bridge the perceived disconnectedness between the two. There is no particular time marking of what is past and what is present in my inner life while at the same time these two seem to constantly interplay or even compete with each other. The same 'fenomena' of sometimes illegible switches in between times, societal values and cultures I observe also on a level of our present day society. And so the dimension of 'time' and our passage through it back and forwards became a very important consideration for my works.
Colours that I choose are traditionally culturally determined, but I use them deliberately in a setting which tries to underpin not only their symbolic meaning but also their natural sensual / emotional impact on the viewer. By patterns and textures I seek to cover several purposes: for example, to invoke femininity by linking to the theme of traditional female crafts and to create link to the 'time dimension' through our natural response to the surface quality of an artwork purposefully created in a 'time-consuming' manner.
In the content of my works I carry on the issues of facing the reality (no matter how grim) versus hiding from the reality, of constructing lies and withholding the crucial information versus working out the way to express the truth, of forced on discontinuity and disconnectedness versus conscious effort for wholeness and continuity, of ‘easy’ hypocrisy and ignorance versus ‘hard earned’ peaceful perseverance in questioning all and openness to anything new. l believe that these issues are issues of responsibility between individuals on personal and interpersonal level as well as one generation or any defined group of people towards the other.... and I am concerned by the impact on those who are innocent to start with..……
